The Marathon Flame for the first time in Cyprus! – Press Release 06/12/2012

Today at noon, Thursday, 6th of December, 2012, the Flame of the Marathon arrived for the first time to Cyprus, from the country that gave birth to it.The Flame was escorted from Greece by the vice-mayor of Marathon, Mr. Christos Stamos, and the Special Secretary of SEGAS, Mr. Thanasis Vogiatzis.

In a brief ceremony held at the Larnaca airport, the persons accompanying the Flame expressed their happiness that the sacred flame arrived to Cyprus as part of the celebrations of the 3rd Quantum Nicosia Marathon. In their turn, Ms. Soula Kollakidou, on behalf of the Nicosia Municipality, Mr. Damianos Hatjidamianou, on behalf of Cyprus Olympic Committee, and the President of the Organising Committee of the Nicosia Marathon, Mr. George Killas, expressed their excitement for the arrival of the Flame and thanked both the Marathon Municipality and SEGAS who responded positively to the related request.

“We welcome into our hearts the spirit of Freedom and “fair play”, which this sacred flame represents” stated Mr. Killas.
The ceremony was accompanied by marches of the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra. After that, torchbearers of DRO.ME.A racing and Pericles Demetriou clubs, carried the flame up to the entrance of Nicosia, from where selected athletes that left their indelible trail in Greek and Cyprus sports, undertook to convey the flame to Famagusta Gate.

Amongst them is Eleni Artymata, Spyros Spyrou, Kyriakos Onisiforou, Dora Kyriakou and Dimitris Araouzos. Andri Avraam will be the one who will hand the torch to the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Constantinos Yiorkadjis who will light the altar of the 3rd Quantum Nicosia Marathon. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra of Ancient Greek Musical Instruments “Terpandros” will enrich the ritual of the ceremony. The opening of the Registration Centre will follow.
